The incident documented here is highly typical of the way the Israeli army treats journalists, especially Palestinian one: soldiers disrupt the journalists’ work in the field, as the latter attempt to document military violence. Then the local commander declares the area a “closed military zone” and arrests a Palestinian journalist for merely being there. This treatment of journalists often include physical violence, confiscating and destroying equipment and, as the case of Muhammad al-Qiq demonstrates, arbitrary detention of journalists based on “secret evidence” that is never shared with the detainee or his attorney.
