Protests following the murder of Muhammad Abu Khdeir

In the early hours of the morning of 2 July 2014, a Palestinian teen from Shu’fat, Muhammad Abu Khdeir, was seen being forced into a car that sped away before anyone was able to assist him. Abu Khdeir’s charred remains were discovered a few hours later by police in a forest near Jerusalem, in the vicinity of the destroyed Palestinian village of Deir Yassin.
An investigation revealed that Abu Khdeir was a random victim of Israeli settlers, bent on vengeance after the discovery of the remains of three Israeli settlers who disappeared in the West Bank two weeks prior. His autopsy also revealed that he was burnt alive shortly after his abduction.
As news spread about Abu Khdeir’s gruesome murder, many Palestinians, in Jerusalem and all over the country (including Wadi ‘Ara, Nazareth and other places) took to the street to protest not only this crime, but the vicious racist incitement that preceded it. Israeli police then moved to brutally squash dissent, using excessive violence against demonstrators and arresting hundreds of them.

Following the funeral of Muhammad Abu Khdeir from Shufat, slain by Israelis a few days ago, and the growing incitement to violence against Palestinians, demonstrators in numerous Palestinian communities within the 1948 borders took to the streets, from Nazareth in the north to Kseifeh in the south. In WadiAra, angry protesters clashed with fully armoured…

Hundreds of Yafa-based activists filled the city’s historic clock tower square in a show of rage over the killing of Muhammad Abu Khdeir from Shu’fat, and the current wave of racist incitement and violence towards Palestinians. Protesters also briefly blocked the road, bringing traffic to a halt. If you like my work, please also ‘like’…

The Use of Excessive Force in Suppression of Civil Protest

On Friday, 31.1.2014 I participated in a conference organized by Amnesty International Israel titled “The Use of Excessive Force in Suppression of Civil Protest.” I would like to express my gratitude to Halleli Pinson and Noa Shaindlinger for their assistance and to Ofek Brisker for documenting this on video.
