Today's march was met with excessive force by the Israeli army, as protesters were fired upon with tear gas canisters, rubber-coated and even live bullets. Six young men were injured, five from live bullets, and one from a tear gas canister. Although eventually transported to hospital for treatment, the army refused to let the ambulance through for about half an hour.

In solidarity with the hunger striking Palestinian political prisoners, residents of the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh marched and confronted the Israeli army. The strike was launched on Prisoner's Day, 17 April, and included thousands of political prisoners of different factions. The prisoners demand immediate improvement to the conditions of their incarceration, such as access to education, phones, family visits etc. The Israeli state retaliated against the leadership of the prisoners, especially against Marwan Barghouti, by relocating them to different jails and placing them in solitary confinement.
The Nabi Saleh marchers waved the Fatah flags, chanted against administrative detention, and call for the release of political prisoners and against the ongoing occupation and land confiscations. The Israeli army attempted to disperse protesters with tear gas, rubber- and sponge-encased steel bullets. No major injuries or arrests reported.

Israeli military court at Ofer, near Bitunia, released eight political prisoners, all young men from Nabi Saleh. The prisoners, arrested over the past several months during night raids, were accused of stone throwing and other offences, and the prosecution initially requested significant jail sentences of several years. However, failing to provide significant evidence, the prosecutors reached a plea bargain with all eight, with time served. The prisoners were released late in the evening as a large crowd of their kin were waiting for them outside the fences of Ofer military camp. Two more young men from Nabi Saleh, 'Ez al-Din and Maher, remain in prison.

Commemorating the battle of al-Qastel, Palestinians from the village of Nabi Saleh confronted the Israeli army protesting the continued colonial violence and land expropriations. Villagers commemorated the battle of al-Qastel of 1948, famous for the steadfastness and heroism of Palestinian resistance fighters led by 'Abd al-Qader al-Husseini against Zionist militias. However, al-Husseini fell in battle, and the ensuing defeat enabled Zionist troops to raid the nearby village of Deir Yassin, committing a heinous massacre. The memory of the heroics of al-Husseini and his men, including a man from Nabi Saleh, keeps inspiring the villagers who are still resisting Israeli occupation and brutality. Protesters made their stand on the mountain overlooking the village's al-Qaws spring which was expropriated by Israel for the benefit of the settlers. Even though the youth refrained from hurling stones, soldiers still fired long-range tear gas canisters, one of which missed a local journalist by the width of a hair. The range and velocity of these canisters, when hitting the human body, may result in serious injuries and even fatalities.

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Land Day, residents of Nabi Saleh, and many solidarity activists from Palestine and the world marched towards 'ayn al-Qaws, the spring and adjacent lands expropriated by the Israeli settlers. Land Day was first marked on 30 March 1976 with a massive demonstration in the Galilee, northern Palestine, when the Israeli police brutally dispersed marchers, killing six of them. since then, Land Day has been commemorated mainly within the 1948 borders, but after the first intifada, the day was more commonly marked by Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
Israeli soldiers fired barrages of tear gas at the demonstrators, who marched waving the Palestinian flag and olive branches, marking Palestinian rootedness and profound connection to the land. Protesters were able to reach the spring, while settlers retaliated by attacking Palestinian journalists and damaging their equipment, as soldiers hurled stun grenades and threatened to pepper spray Palestinians if they do not disperse. Then, as Palestinians retreated, the soldiers fired many rounds of tear gas canisters. I suffered from asphyxiation from the gas, gasping for air, as my lungs and eyes were burning for several minutes. Another Palestinian woman collapsed after inhaling the gas. In addition,, the soldiers fired the new, long-range, tear gas canisters and hit a Palestinian boy. Finally, there is no reliable information as to the long-term health-related effects of exposure to tear gas, but several villagers are reporting visible deterioration of their health as a result of repeated inhalation of tear gas, during demonstrations and military raids, including occasions when the army fires tear gas into residential homes.
