About 100 people congregated in the historical Clock Tower Square in Jaffa, to protest the home demolitions and forced evictions of Palestinians by the state. The protest was organized by local activists, in response to the pre-dawn raid of Umm al-Hiran, a Palestinian-Bedouin community in the Naqab/Negev, where police officers shot and killed 50 year old school teacher Ya’qub Musa Abu al-Qi’an. Umm al-Hiran has been slated to replaced by an exclusively-Jewish settlement named Hiran, but the government refuses to offer the Bedouins a suitable alternative. Protesters began marching south from the Clock Tower Square, calling for an end to demolitions and condemn this morning’s killing and subsequent smearing of the deceased as a “terrorist.” The marchers briefly blocked the main thoroughfare, eliciting open hostility from a few Jewish-Israeli passers-by, to express their outrage at the continued government-led incitement against the state’s Palestinian citizens.
