Many thousands of settlers reveled in the streets of occupied Jerusalem as they celebrated the 47th anniversary of the occupation of the eastern parts of the city and their subsequent annexation. Israeli border and riot police opted to seal off the Zionist Jerusalem Day marchers by forcing store owners in the old city to shut their businesses early. Police officers deployed all over the old city, Damascus Gate and the area, brutally removing Palestinians and forcing them behind barricades. Horse-mounted policemen chased Palestinians through the adjacent streets, hurling stun grenades and tear gas at them, and beating many, including women, children and journalists. Several people were also violently arrested.
