Activists gathered in the historic clock tower square in Jaffa to stage a solidarity vigil with the hunger striking Palestinian political prisoners. About 1500 political prisoners have been on strike since 17 April (observed in Palestine as Prisoners Day) in protest over the conditions of their incarceration. Among other things, they demand access to education and improved access to their families. Israel has been penalizing the prisoners, transferring some to other jails, and placing the strike’s leaders in solidarity confinement. The state even attempted to discredit the leader Marwan Barghouti. The Jaffa vigil joins similar actions across Palestine and globally.
