Jaffa-based activists welcome Samer al-‘Issawi, the former political prisoner and hunger striker, recently released from Israeli prison. ‘Issawi was received at the city’s historic clock tower square, where activists staged daily vigils calling for his release over an extended period of time.
Update: during the summertime Israeli assault on Gaza, Samer Issawi was rearrested and placed in administrative detention, which has since been renewed. Alongside Issawi, Israel rearrested many who were released in the 2011 prisoner swap under different pretexts.

Answering the call of the popular committees, hundreds of Palestinians staged a demonstration in front of the Ofer military prison compound, protesting the plight of Palestinian political prisoners. The IDF fired barrages of tear gas, plastic coated steel bullets and live ammunition. At least 10 people were taken to the hospital in Ramallah for treatment, including a photojournalist from Bilin who suffered gun shot wound to his abdomen and a head injury.
The IDF has increasingly been deliberately targeting journalists even though they are easily identified as such.

I reached the location where the soldiers were positioned the day before. On the ground, we found several empty tear gas canisters, as well as four shell casings, from live bullets fired from that location.
On Nakba day, the IDF shot and killed two protesters with live bullets. Initially, the Israeli army denied live ammunition had been used at all. Only after the family of slain teen Nadim Nuwara insisted on an autopsy, which produced conclusive evidence, the IDF was forced to admit that indeed live ammunition was fired and charged the border patrol soldier who discharged it with manslaughter. The soldier is currently awaiting trial, under house arrest.

Following the brutal murder of 16 years old Muhammad Abu Khdeir from the Shufat refugee camp in Jerusalem, angry protesters took to the streets, blocked some of the main highways and the light rail and clashed with Israeli riot police. Hundreds were injured while several demonstrators arrested. On Friday, the body of Muhammad Abu Khdeir was laid to rest in his native hometown, with a massive crowd of thousands in attendance. Israeli police forces in full riot gear, blocked the entrance to the old city of Jerusalem from Damascus Gate, preventing worshippers from reaching al-Aqsa to pray in the first Ramadan Friday. Palestinians then converged on the Damascus Gate area, praying in the street and confronting the police. During and following the boy’s funeral, Israeli police attacked mourners, and angry crowds in Shu’fat, Wadi al-Joz and elsewhere in the city clashed with policemen.

15 Israeli activists protested against the massacre in Gaza outside Hazor Air Force Base. The Base is where planes depart to bomb Gaza. More than 1,000 people have been killed in Gaza so far, the majority of whom civilians, including more than 200 children.
On July 8, 2014, Israel launched an offensive against the Gaza strip, ostensibly to ‘stop rocket attacks from militant groups.’ Over 7 weeks, The Israeli army conducted massive aerial bombardments of the densely populated strip, alongside a ground offensive, killing over 2200 people, among them 500 children.
This deadly offensive, known as ‘operation protective edge,’ enjoyed an unprecedented support among Israeli-Jewish citizens. Nevertheless, a small minority of anti-war activists too to the streets to protest the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza.

In recent weeks, I have witnessed on several occasions a worrying trend in the way the IDF opts to handle popular protests in the West Bank: In addition to tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets, the army now deploys well-positioned snipers that target protesters with live ammunition, hence the recent sharp rise in injuries (many of them severe) from bullets.
