Villagers and solidarity activists marched against the occupation in Nabi Saleh, heading for the hilly edge of the village overlooking the settlement of Halamish. The IDF, however, was already waiting for demonstrators with at least two snipers who immediately fired live ammunition. Without using any other crowd control measures, such as stun grenades, the snipers fired tutu (0.22mm) bullets at the demonstrators, injuring two, a man in his 20s, and a 17 year old boy. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. This comes at the heels of several fatal shootings: a high ranking officer, commander of the area's forces, executed a boy for stone throwing at his car, only to be given the full protection and support from the army; earlier this week, a teen was shot dead by the army in the Jenin area, and a man of 52 was shot and killed by soldiers in his own home near Hebron; a few hours later, two brothers were shot and severely injured during a military raid in their Nablus home. This escalation also proves that the military and legal apparatus provide soldiers with protection thus lending legitimacy after the fact to shooting civilians without accountability.

21 years ago, a settler by the name of Baruch Goldstein entered the Ibrahimi mosque at dawn and shot down 29 Muslim worshippers, injuring 125 more. In the chain of tragic events following the massacre, the Israeli army closed Shuhadaa street, formerly a lively commercial hub, to the movement of Palestinians, including those who actually reside there. The annual "Open Shuhadaa street" campaign renews the popular call to end this closure. Today, Palestinian and international solidarity activists marched in the old city of Hebron demanding the opening of the street. Israeli soldiers attempted to disperse marchers using stun grenades, rubber-coated bullets and even live (tutu) bullets that sent at least three protesters to the hospital for medical treatment.

Scores suffocated from tear gas today during the weekly demonstration in Nabi Saleh. The march began at Martyrs' Square and proceeded towards the main entrance to the village, whose iron gates were closed. Palestinian and foreign protesters were led by children carrying signs with slogans against the occupation and demanding national rights. When protesters were 100 meters from the gate, clashes ensued, and the Israeli soldiers fired tear gas canisters and rubber bullets at protesters. Demonstrators then marched towards the expropriated water spring and lands, as women and girls led the march to shield the youth from the snipers. The popular resistance movement is calling to form a united leadership and program of struggle on the basis of popular resistance in order to resist policies of uprooting, displacement and settlements, and for the international community to implement resolutions against the occupation.
