Israeli activists gathered in a show of solidarity with conscientious objectors in front of Hakirya military base in Tel Aviv. In Israel military service is mandatory for Jewish citizens. Those who refuse to serve are often repeatedly sentenced to prison. Protesters, several of whom are past refusers, attempted to convince passers-by, many of them uniformed soldiers, to refuse military service. In attendance was also a delegate from the anti-Zionist ultra orthodox community, who has been fighting state policies to draft community members and Yeshiva students into the army.
