The military court in Jaffa held a hearing for an IDF officer charged with unauthorized use of weapons, during an incident in which he fired live ammunition in the village of Nabi Saleh in June 2013. The accused arrived to his hearing as a free man, accompanied by his supportive friends. In the interim until the next hearing, the judge ordered his detention for 10 in military prison. The officer might be facing dismissal from service. Tamimi, who appeared as a witness, was brought in under heavy police guard inside a vehicle designated for detainees, escorted in and out of the courthouse by soldiers, and eventually driven back to the West Bank, while the accused soldier conducted himself and was treated as a free man.
Moreover, in an earlier session, a man was court martialed for desertion, and was sentenced to 220 days in military jail. Obviously, the military system treats desertion much more harshly than it does its trigger-happy officers, who fire live ammunition at unarmed Palestinian demonstrators.
