Scores of Jaffa-based activists demonstrated in the city’s historical Clock Tower Square calling for the release of Walid Daqqa, a Palestinian political prisoner serving a life sentence in Israeli prison. Daqqa was convicted of participating in resistance operation that targeted an Israeli soldier, and has been jailed since 1986. Recently, Palestinian MK Bassel Ghattas was accused of trying to smuggle a cell phone to Daqqa, who, like all Palestinian political prisoners, are forbidden from using telephones. In retaliation, the Israeli prison Services transferred Daqqa from Ketziot prison to solitary confinement in Ramon prison. Protesters demanded his release from solitary confinement and his release from prison after more than three decades. Although a few Israeli fascists attempted to threaten demonstrators and disrupt the event, the protest concluded without incident.
